Onward Debates: Is Selling Alcohol At Beaver Stadium A Good Idea?

The time has come, folks.

According to a report from the Centre Daily Times, Penn State is considering selling alcohol at Beaver Stadium during the team’s matchup against Central Michigan on September 24. This game would reportedly serve as a test run.

While the initial reaction may’ve been overwhelmingly positive, it may not be all well and good. Two of our staffers debated as to whether this is a good idea.

Tobey Prime: Let’s Get Sloshed At Beaver Stadium

Is this really a debate? I mean, come on now.

I know the news has yet to be confirmed by Penn State, but if the rumors are true, all of State College should be parading down College Avenue. The greatest show in college sports is on the cusp of becoming even greater.

I’m not going to deny that the lines to get a beer would be worse than the bar crawl this past weekend, and don’t even get me started on the prices that will ensue. However, there’s nothing I would want to check off my bucket list more than crushing a brew with 107,000 of my closest friends.

Heck, I may even leave the tailgate early just to enjoy a few in the stands.

Still, what I’m most excited about is the future. What if I could down a $2 Dirty Sprite at a Champs-sponsored vendor stand? Maybe Cafe’s Long Island pitchers could become an option? The opportunities are truly endless, and that has me excited!

So, yes. Penn State should start selling alcohol at the games. I mean, everyone is drunk before the game anyways. We might as well keep the party going throughout.

Zach Donaldson: Maybe We Should Pump The Brakes

I’m all for having a good time and enjoying a few brews at a sporting event. In fact, I’d probably advocate for it more than most.

But the fact that copious amounts of alcohol are already being consumed hours prior to kickoff is the first thing that makes it a questionable idea. Not to mention, a huge portion of the stadium consists of college students.

Think about how much the average college student consumes before a football game. It depends on what you drink, but it’s a lot. Plus, the Happy Valley atmosphere on a Saturday doesn’t exactly promote drinking in moderation.

Let’s just say that things could get messy.

Not to mention we already know that the price is going to be jacked up, and it’ll probably be upwards of $20 for a beverage. This is ridiculous, and college students don’t need to be spending that kind of money on booze. But, when you’re already trashed, it can be hard to resist.

Aside from the price and giving already borderline blacked-out college students increased access to more alcohol, navigating the stadium concourse will become even more hectic.

It’s hard enough to hit the concession stands for a chicken basket to soak up some of the pregame drinks and make it back to your seat. Now, imagine a concourse full of people trying to buy food, drinks, and go to the bathroom. That’s anarchy.

Once again, I’m all for adult beverages at football games, especially considering how some recent seasons at Penn State have unfolded. But, let’s consider the repercussions on a larger scale.

Isn’t the amount of alcohol already consumed enough?
