Penn State Football Stays Unranked In AP Top 25 Poll
After escaping West Lafayette with a 35-31 victory over Purdue Thursday night, Penn State stayed unranked in this week’s AP Top 25 Poll.
Despite still being unranked, the Nittany Lions received 122 votes and were the second team left out of the top 25.
Penn State barely squeezed out a win last week, which saw everything from Drew Allar’s collegiate debut to an eight-play, 80-yard game-winning drive led by Sean Clifford to give Penn State the win.
Considering that Cincinnati is the only team in the bottom ten of the poll that lost last week, it’s not surprising that Penn State stayed unranked. Barring any massive upsets next week, James Franklin’s crew will probably stay unranked, too, since there are only two ranked matchups between No. 21 BYU & No. 9 Baylor, and No. 24 Tennessee & No. 17 Pitt.
Big Ten foes Ohio State (No. 3), Michigan (No. 4), Michigan State (No. 14), and Wisconsin (No. 19) remain ahead of Penn State in the top 25.
As for the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Nittany Lions were unranked this week. Ohio State (No. 3), Michigan (No. 5), Michigan State (No. 11), and Wisconsin (No. 18) all remain ahead of Penn State on that front, as well. However, ESPN’s FPI rankings, which aim to measure team strength and are meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance, have the blue and white at No. 16.
The Nittany Lions will be back in action this weekend with a home-opening matchup against Ohio University at noon on Saturday, September 10. The game will be televised on ABC.
