Former Penn State football running back Franco Harris is getting his No. 32 retired by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Steelers will retire Harris’ number at halftime of the team’s December 24 game against the Raiders in honor of the 50th anniversary of the “Immaculate Reception.”

The famous play occurred in 1972 when Terry Bradshaw’s late-game pass was deflected off a Raiders defender and right into the arms of Harris, who took it into the end zone to propel the Steelers to their first-ever playoff victory.

In his legendary career with the Steelers, Harris compiled 12,120 rushing yards, posted 100 total touchdowns, was a first-team All-Pro in 1977, and was named to nine Pro Bowls. Additionally, the Hall of Famer won four Super Bowls and was the Super Bowl IX MVP.

Before his time in the Steel City, Harris played three seasons at Penn State from 1969 to 1971. He rushed for 2,002 yards and scored 25 touchdowns during his time as a Nittany Lion.

The Steelers drafted Harris with the No. 13 overall pick in the 1972 NFL Draft.
