Staff Predictions: Penn State vs. Ohio

Last week, Penn State football survived a battle of attrition with Big Ten foe Purdue when it opened up its season with a 35-31 road victory.

The Nittany Lions’ week two opponent, the Ohio Bobcats, are coming off a 3-9 season where they finished third in the MAC East. A week after the hotly anticipated debut of five-star freshman quarterback Drew Allar and a plethora of other young players, the Penn State faithful will likely get to see more action from the lot.

Our staffers believe the Nittany Lions will have a relatively smooth path to a 2-0 record in their home opener.

Nolan Wick (1-0): Penn State 41, Ohio 16

Penn State faces a veteran Ohio squad in its home opener, but the Nittany Lions should have few problems taking care of the Bobcats. While anything can happen, a G5 team that just finished with a 3-9 record doesn’t strike me as being on the verge of pulling off such a massive upset.

Penn State is better on paper in every category than Ohio, so it should handle its business in what will probably be its easiest game of the 2022 season. Saturday’s game will also be a good opportunity for Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, and other young players to see quality playing time.

Adam Babetski (0-1): Penn State 52, Ohio 17

I was surprised that I was the only one who picked Penn State to lose last week, but as it turns out, I might just have bad instincts. There’s no ambiguity here though — this will be a romp. Expect a lot of early points from the offense before James Franklin takes his foot off the gas sometime in the second half. Unless Ohio adds “State” to its school name, Penn State won’t have any trouble.

Devon Craley (1-0): Penn State 41, Ohio 23

The Nittany Lions were battle-tested a week ago, and they left Purdue with a character win to get that all-important first win under their belt. This week will be a little bit easier for Penn State, which I predict will beat Ohio with relative ease to move to 2-0. Ohio is coming off a good win against FAU, but Beaver Stadium and the Nittany Lions will be a big challenge for the Bobcats — a challenge I don’t think they it’ll be able to overcome. I see Penn State winning by multiple possessions, with Sean Clifford having a big game.

Matt Brown (1-0): Penn State 45, Ohio 13

After a 35-31 victory at Purdue last Thursday, Penn State gets a bit of a break before heading down to Auburn next weekend. Coming into Happy Valley for Penn State’s first home game of the season is no easy task, and second-year head coach Tim Albin will try to do the impossible and upset the Nittany Lions.

However, that’s not happening. I expect Penn State to dominate this game from the start, scoring as much as possible and not taking its foot off the gas. Sean Clifford shouldn’t have to play more than three quarters in this game, and true freshman quarterback Drew Allar should be able to get some valuable game reps. The Nittany Lions should win this game by at least 20 points, or, they’re in trouble.

Mikey DeAngelis (1-0): Penn State 33, Ohio 10

Any game could go any way, but I think Penn State will take care of the Ohio Bobcats pretty easily. Hopefully, we get to see the offense truly get cooking, giving the fans a better look at some newcomers like Mitchell Tinsley, Nick Singleton, and maybe even Drew Allar if the Nittany Lions get a decent lead.

Frankie Marzano (1-0): Penn State 69, Ohio 0

Drew Allar will play the entire second half, and Penn State fans will explode on Facebook and Twitter when he throws two touchdowns. I expect an easy cruise through the game to prepare for the next road trip to Auburn.

Sam Fremin (1-0): Penn State 50, Ohio 9

Sean Clifford and the other starters will be benched relatively quickly. Ohio isn’t even the best team in the MAC. I’m trying really hard not to be mean.

Ryan Parsons (1-0): Penn State 41, Ohio 13

Again, let’s not overthink this. We’ll be watching Drew Allar by the third quarter and everything will be smooth sailing heading into Auburn week.

Gabe Angieri (1-0): Penn State 45, Ohio 10

Get ready to see a lot of Drew Allar in the second half, folks.
