Penn State To Host Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Events

Penn State will observe National Hispanic Heritage Month with a wide range of events, both in-person and via Zoom, starting next week.

This year’s theme is “Nuestra Música (Our Music): Identity, Culture and Resistance,” chosen by the University Park Hispanic Heritage Month organizing committee.

The festivities will kick off at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 19 with the screening of ‘Dolores: Rebel. Activist. Feminist. Mother.’ The viewing will take place in the Freeman Auditorium, located inside the HUB.

Betto Arcos, author of the book “Music Stories from the Cosmic Barrio,” will serve as this year’s keynote speaker. Arcos is also a music journalist and contributor to NPR since 2009. The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 22 in the Pattee-Paterno Library’s Foster Auditorium.

Students can then enjoy a showcase by indie-pop duo REYNA at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28 at HUB Lounge 008. The duo will follow its show with a Q&A session.

The celebration will continue on with a Malpaso Dance Company performance, Happy Valley Latino Festival, a themed dinner at Penn State’s dining commons, and more.

Los Bomberos de la Calle, a Puerto Rican music and dance group, will wrap up the festivities in Heritage Hall at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 14 in the HUB. The event will feature dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by an “interactive presentation” by the group. Business casual attire is required. Tickets to the event are free, but registration is required for those who want to attend the dinner. Students can sign up for dinner here starting on Saturday, October 1.

More events could be added to the month-long celebration as National Hispanic Heritage Month progresses. For the most up-to-date information, take a look at a comprehensive list of all events here.
