No. 11 Penn State Women’s Volleyball Defeats Coastal Carolina In Three Sets

No. 11 Penn State women’s volleyball (11-0) finished off the Penn State Classic with a win against Coastal Carolina (8-5) in three sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-13).

Another massive offensive day for Penn State allowed it to go undefeated in the Penn State Classic, while also remaining undefeated on the season. The team had a .413 hitting percentage with 39 kills in the win.

How It Happened

Unlike their usual starts, the Nittany Lions were down 7-5 within the first few points of the game. A lot of out-of-system balls caused some issues for the Nittany Lions, but they battled back and got their first lead, 12-11, 23 points into the match. Penn State communicated effectively and pulled away, going up 18-13.

Penn State setter Seleisa Elisaia led the charge with two kills of her own to give her team a 25-17 win in the first set.

After an explosive end to the first set, Penn State continued its momentum and came out with an immediate 5-1 lead over the Chanticleers. The Nittany Lions were clicking on all cylinders, constantly bringing the hammer down, as they extended their lead to 14-6.

The defense also decided to put on a show during the second set with massive blocks from Allie Holland and Taylor Trammel. The intensity never wavered, as Penn State really pulled a way with a 21-8 lead, which led to a 25-13 win in the second set. The Nittany Lions were in the driver’s seat heading into the third and potential final set.

In the final set, Penn State once again separated itself from Coastal Carolina with a 9-5 lead. Similarly to the second set, the Nittany Lions pulled away with a dominant stretch that led to an 18-9 advantage. Katie Schumacher-Cawley’s squad ultimately won the last set 25-13 and secured a sweep for its 11th win of the season.

Player Of The Game

Zoe Weatherington | Outside Hitter/Right Side

Aside from her impressive stats with nine kills and a .615 hitting percentage, Weatherington’s attitude provides a huge boost for the rest of her teammates on the court. Her presence at the net and the power of her arm were some of the true highlights of the game.

What’s Next?

Penn State will begin conference play at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 23, with a match against Indiana at Rec Hall.
