Campus community invited to participate in bicycle engagement events Sept. 21-23

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to participate in upcoming engagement events and online activities related to their experiences biking to, from, and around University Park. Transportation Services and the Office of Physical Plant are working with national experts, Nelson\Nygaard, to create a bicycle master plan to identify campus improvements.  
  
“The bicycle master plan is an impactful project that will guide the University’s bicycling planning efforts for years to come,” says Cecily Zhu, sustainable transportation program manager for Transportation Services. “The various in-person and online engagement activities available in the coming weeks offer an opportunity to help share the future of campus biking.”  
  
On-campus and virtual options will be available for cyclists and non-cyclists to share their biking experiences:  

ENGAGEMENT STATIONS

Bicycle plan staff will be on campus to guide attendees through short interactive activities and talk with them about their on-campus biking experiences. Light snacks will be provided.

  • Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. @ HUB plaza at Pollock Rd.
  • Thursday, Sept. 22, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. @ Westgate Building plaza at Burrowes Rd.
  • Friday, Sept. 23, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. @ Allen Street Gates at College Ave.

If the event of inclement weather, the engagement stations will move to the HUB-Robeson Center information tables located just inside the Pollock Road main entrance.

GROUP BICYCLE RIDES

Bicycle plan staff will lead small group bike rides across campus where participants can discuss cycling conditions and concerns.

  • Wednesday, Sept. 21, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Sept. 22, 8 a.m. – 9 a.m.
  • Thursday, Sept. 23, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

ONLINE SURVEY

A short survey on bicycling at University Park is available now and will remain open through Friday, Oct. 7.

ONLINE INTERACTIVE MAP

Share location-based feedback through an interactive map activity through Friday. Oct. 7.

This project is being funded in large part by the Student Fee Board, and representatives from that group, the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) and the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA), are actively involved as members of the project steering committee.   

The final version of the Penn State University Park bicycle master plan will be available to the public and is expected to be released in early 2023.
