Penn State’s University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) has installed a plaque to commemorate the 2001 Village Protest in the HUB, UPUA President Sydney Gibbard announced via email Monday night.

The Village Protest was a 10-day sit-in protest in the HUB after a race-related incident that led to the death of a Black man and an anonymous death threat received by the then-Black Caucus president.

“The plaque is a representation of the courage that Black students displayed to advocate for their community, and it is a commitment from university leaders to listen to students,” Gibbard said in the email.

Current Chief of Staff of the 17th Assembly for the UPUA and former Black Caucus Representative Jeanelle Loiseau worked alongside other student leaders to advocate for the creation and placement of the plaque. The resolution was passed unanimously by UPUA in December 2021.

The plaque is located at the bottom right of the stairs between Sbarro and Starbucks on the ground floor.
