Gameday Coverage: No. 11 Penn State vs. Northwestern

No. 11 Penn State football is wheeling and dealing, as it heads into today’s matchup against Northwestern with a 4-0 record.

The Nittany Lions head into the game coming off a 33-14 victory over Central Michigan. Meanwhile, Northwestern is on the opposite end, heading into Happy Valley with a 1-3 record. The Wildcats’ only win came over Nebraska in Ireland back in week zero. It may be another blowout, but we will certainly see some of Penn State’s younger players get some valuable time, once again.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the first meeting between the two teams since 2017.

Television

Saturday’s matchup will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN. Bob Wischusen and Dan Orlovsky will be on the call, while Kris Budden will provide updates from the sidelines.

Radio

Penn State Sports Network — Steve Jones and Jack Ham
Local: 99.5 & 103.7 FM/1450 AM, Sirius/XM/Internet: 83/83/978

Weather

Unfortunately, it won’t be a pretty day in Happy Valley, as the remnants of Hurricane Ian will come through. It’ll be cold and windy, with intermittent showers coming and going throughout the day, according to AccuWeather. Temperatures at kickoff will be 55 degrees, with the RealFeel set at 44 degrees.

Winds will be 20 miles per hour with gusts getting up to 32 miles per hour. Yikes.

Last Meeting

Former Penn State signal caller Trace McSorley led No. 4 Penn State to a 31-7 victory in Evanston, Illinois back on October 7, 2017. Saquon Barkley scored a pair of touchdowns and totaled 75 yards on 16 carries.

On the other side of the ball, the Nittany Lions were dominant on defense. The Wildcats were only limited to 265 total yards of offense, with 99 coming in the second half. Amani Oruwariye and Christian Campbell both recorded an interception, while Shaka Toney forced a fumble that was recovered by Kevin Givens.

Injuries/Suspensions

Penn State defensive end Zuriah Fisher is out for the season with an undisclosed injury. James Franklin mentioned that he hopes to have offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad and defensive tackle Coziah Izzard in the game against the Wildcats. Smith Vilbert’s status remains “unavailable,” according to Franklin. There have been rumors circulating around campus that Sean Clifford won’t play in the game, but he was fully participating in practice on Wednesday.

As for the Wildcats, wide receiver Charlie Mangieri and defensive back Coco Azema are both questionable with undisclosed injuries.

Betting Lines

Penn State is currently a 24.5-favorite on FanDuel Sportsbook. The over/under is set at 51.5 points.
