Ukrainian Journalist Stanislav Aseyev To Host Lecture At Penn State November 4

Donetsk-born Ukrainian writer and journalist Stanislav Aseyev is coming to Penn State on Friday, November 4, to host a guest lecture. The event is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. in room 157 in the Burrowes Building.

From his unlawful time spent in prison to his reporting on Russian war crimes, Aseyev plans to share his experiences with Penn State students. In 2014, Aseyev wrote investigative reports exposing Russian-sponsored military hostilities in Donbas.

Flash forward a few years later, he was unlawfully imprisoned and tortured by militia forces in 2017 for nearly three years.

One year later while Aseyev remained in captivity, a compilation of his dispatches titled “In Isolation” was issued. Once he was released, Aseyev published an autobiography titled “The Torture Camp on Paradise Street,” which disclosed the mistreatment and trauma he endured while held captive.

Due to the impressive work he was able to produce, he secured several journalism and media awards over the past few years. Recently, Aseyev founded the Justice Initiative Fund to ensure that perpetrators involved in Russian war crimes are held accountable and face consequences for their actions.

Aseyev will present both his books and share his insight about what he endured over the years.

The event is sponsored by the Woskob Endowment for Ukrainian Studies, the Penn State Ukrainian Society, the Penn State Russian Club, and the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures. Anyone is welcome to attend the free event.
