Report: Penn State Hoops Offers Mike Rhoades Head Coaching Position

Just six days after Micah Shrewsberry departed the Penn State men’s basketball program for Notre Dame, the university reportedly offered VCU’s Mike Rhoades the head coaching position, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

Rothstein reported that Penn State offered Rhoades an annual salary of over $3 million.

The VCU head coach compiled a 129-61 record and three NCAA Tournament appearances over the course of six seasons in Richmond. This past year, Rhoades guided the Rams to an Atlantic 10 Championship and a first-round NCAA Tournament appearance against St. Mary’s.

Rhoades served as an assistant and associate head coach between 2009 and 2014 at VCU, then spent a three-year stint in Houston at Rice from 2014 to 2017. The Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, native led the Owls to their first 20-win campaign in 11 years.

In 2017, Rhoades returned to Richmond to fill in the head coaching job at VCU and earned the Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year in 2019 in his second season in the role.

Rhoades began his collegiate coaching career at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, and led the Division III Yellow Jackets to a 197-76 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances over 10 seasons.

A college basketball player himself, Rhodes competed at Lebanon Valley, where he still holds the record for assists, steals, and free-throw percentage.
