Sustainable State College To Host Earth Day Events April 21 & 22

Sustainable State College, a borough-sponsored program that aims to increase environmental awareness around State College, is hosting a number of events to celebrate Earth Day on Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22.

The series of events will kick off with an Arbor Day celebration at Mayor Welch Plaza at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 21. Mayor Ezra Nanes will present the official Arbor Day proclamation from the National Arbor Day Foundation that designates State College as “Tree City, USA.” After the announcement, free tree seedlings will be given to attendees.

On Saturday, April 22, the Clearwater Conservancy will host its 27th annual Watershed Cleanup Day. The event brings together volunteers to clean up local streams and open spaces across Central Pennsylvania. According to organizers, last year’s event garnered 430 volunteers that prevented 12,500 pounds of garbage from entering waterways across 47 sites.

Also on Saturday, a Pollinator and Bird Garden tour will be held at the Penn State Arboretum. The event will tour the new addition to the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens and provide education on native pollinators and bird-friendly landscapes. Spots for the arboretum tour are limited, and you can register for the event here.

An arts and crafts exhibition that planned to allow attendees to paint and take home a shadow box or birdhouse has been canceled.

Finally, a showing of the movie “Plastic Earth,” originally scheduled for dusk on April 22 at the Sidney Friedman Parklet, has been rescheduled to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at 3 Dots Downtown.
