Four Penn State Softball Players Earn Big Ten Honors

Watch out for Penn State softball, folks.

Ahead of the start of the Big Ten Tournament beginning Wednesday afternoon, four Nittany Lions earned recognition from the conference. Emily Maddock, Lexie Black, Bailey Parshall, and Morgan Farrah all earned Big Ten awards.

Maddock was the lone Nittany Lion to earn a nod to the All-Big Ten first team after an impressive season. Her batting average of .456 leads Penn State and is second in the conference. Her on-base percentage of .510 is also fifth in the Big Ten this season.

Black and Parshall were both named second-team All-Big Ten. Black’s 28 runs and 43 hits are both tied for second-most on the Nittany Lions’ squad. However, Black’s defensive work helps her stand out even more — the catcher’s 251 putouts are the 11th-most in the Big Ten.

Black’s pitcher, Parshall, had a record-setting season so far. Parshall broke the Penn State strikeout record in April after recording her 746th strikeout against Bucknell. Her ERA of 1.46 also places her as second-best in the Big Ten.

Farrah earned the conference’s Sportsmanship Award. The graduate transfer from Colgate played in 12 games this year and earned six starts, recording 53 putouts for Penn State.

The Nittany Lions return to action at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday for their Big Ten Tournament matchup against Michigan. The game will be played at Illinois’ Eichelberger Field and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
