Penn State Football Tight End Theo Johnson Sentenced For Fraternity Assault

Update, July 3:

Penn State Athletics provided a statement regarding Johnson’s disciplinary intervention programming sentence Monday.

“We are aware of the result of Theo Johnson’s case,” a Penn State Athletics spokesperson wrote. “These alleged actions do not reflect the values and standards of our program and have been addressed.”

Original Story:

Penn State football’s Theo Johnson has been sentenced to six months of Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition (ARD) for an assault in February at an off-campus fraternity.

According to the Pennsylvania website on ARD, the program is intended to give first-time offenders “a fresh start” and those offenders could see their cases dismissed or records expunged following completion of the program.

According to court documents, Johnson’s case for simple assault was dropped by prosecutors, while he was sentenced to ARD for criminal mischief and another simple assault charge.

Johnson was charged after an assault at the Sigma Chi fraternity, in which he punched a victim after being asked to leave. The victim was later transported to the Mount Nittany Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with a concussion.

Johnson has been expected to compete for the starting tight end role with the Nittany Lions in the upcoming season, after the departure of Brenton Strange.

Penn State Athletics has not responded to an immediate request for comment.
