Penn State Football Tight End Theo Johnson Named To Mackey Award Preseason Watch List

Penn State football tight end Theo Johnson was named to the 2023 John Mackey Award watch list for the second consecutive year Friday. The annual award is given to the nation’s top tight end in college football.

With the departure of former starting tight end Brenton Strange, Johnson is perhaps one of the top tight end targets for the Nittany Lions’ offense in 2023. The Windsor, Ontario, native has made 16 starts across 31 total appearances during his previous two years in the blue and white.

In 2022, Johnson appeared in 11 games, hauling in 20 receptions for 328 yards and four touchdowns. The Nittany Lion caught 19 passes for 213 yards and a lone touchdown in his freshman campaign in 2021.

During last season’s White Out against Minnesota, the Canadian had one of his best games as a Nittany Lion, catching five passes for 75 yards and a touchdown en route to the team’s 45-17 victory over the Golden Gophers.
