Penn State Football’s Dominic DeLuca Given No. 0 Jersey
Jonathan Sutherland has a successor.
Penn State football linebacker and special teams player Dominic DeLuca was given the team’s No. 0 jersey ahead of the upcoming season, the team announced Wednesday. The jersey, which was first worn by Sutherland, is given to a player who is a “tough, disciplined, dependable, physical leader.”
The tradition of the No. 0 jersey began in 2020 when the NCAA allowed the number to be worn on players’ jerseys. It was first picked up by Sutherland, who was a four-time team captain often serving on special teams before he was signed by the Seattle Seahawks this past offseason as an undrafted free agent.
DeLuca, like Sutherland, is a linebacker who spends much of his time with the special teams unit. He was named a captain in August after being placed on scholarship at the conclusion of the 2022 season. He had previously worn the No. 34 jersey.
