Penn State Men’s Soccer Collects Four Big Ten Postseason Awards

Ahead of its Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal matchup against Rutgers, Penn State men’s soccer collected four Big Ten postseason honors Friday following the conclusion of the regular season.

Peter Mangione was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Femi Awodesu was named the Defensive Player of the Year, Kris Shakes was named the Goalkeeper of the Year, and Jeff Cook was named the Coach of the Year.

Senior Mangione registered nine goals and four assists through 16 games with the Nittany Lions. Mangione is a two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year after securing the award in 2021. He’s the first Penn State player to achieve that feat.

Awodesu, Penn State’s other captain at the helm of the blue and white, is the Nittany Lions’ first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year recipient. The senior recorded three goals along with maintaining a 0.75 goals-given-up-per-game percentage.

Goaltender Shakes closed the regular season with a conference-leading seven shutouts and a season-long .759 goals-against average. The Parkland, Florida, native tallied over 1,400 minutes in the net this season and an assist.

Finally, Cook was awarded his second Big Ten Coach of the Year distinction after leading Penn State to its second regular-season title in two years.

Mangione, Awodesu, and Shakes were named to the All-Big Ten first team, and Mangione was one of two unanimous selections. Meanwhile, Caden Grabfelder was included on the All-Freshman team and Samuel Ovesen was honored as part of the Sportsmanship Team.
