Penn State Student Accused Of Downloading & Sharing Child Pornography

Former Penn State student Riley Davis, 22, was arrested in connection with alleged violations of downloading and disseminating child pornography.

Police wrote in an affidavit of probable cause that Davis allegedly used the university’s network last fall to download a 27-minute-long video depicting pubescent and prepubescent children nude and engaged in sexual acts. Davis also allegedly used BitTorrent file-sharing software to share the file with other users from his computer in his dorm room.

On November 13, 2023, Middletown Township Police in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, reported that child pornography was being shared using the Penn State network and notified Penn State Police, according to the affidavit.

Davis initially denied possessing or downloading any child sexual abuse material, police wrote in the affidavit. He later admitted to downloading the video, watching it, and deleting it.

He allegedly told police that he downloaded the material using BitTorrent because of “morbid curiosity” but denied having shared the media. In the statement written by police, Davis downloaded the file and forgot to turn off sharing, allowing dissemination by other users.

Davis is charged with two felonies in the second degree of sexual abuse of children. One count of relating to allegedly disseminating the video to others and the second for possessing the material.

“The Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Response will review the allegations of misconduct and determine appropriate next steps,” a university spokesperson told Onward State Tuesday. “The university may take student conduct action in addition to, and separate from, the charges filed by police. This individual is not currently enrolled.”

Davis was arraigned before District Judge Don Hahn, who set unsecured bail at $50,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, January 31.
