Bill O’Brien Hired As Boston College Head Coach

Update, 4:53 p.m.

Boston College officially announced the hiring of Bill O’Brien to its head coaching position.

Original Story:

Former Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien has been hired as head coach at Boston College, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

O’Brien became head coach at Penn State in 2012 after the firing of Joe Paterno and in the midst of the Sandusky scandal. He led the Nittany Lions to a 15-9 record during his two seasons with the team and won the 2012 Bear Bryant Coach of the Year award.

After leaving Penn State, O’Brien served as the head coach of the Houston Texans for seven seasons before heading to Alabama to become the offensive coordinator. From there, O’Brien became the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

After one season with the Patriots, O’Brien took the offensive coordinator position at Ohio State in early January. By early February, O’Brien was named as a finalist for the Boston College opening.

The hiring cancels O’Brien’s return to Beaver Stadium as the offensive coordinator of the Buckeyes, which was supposed to happen during the upcoming season.
