Penn State Football Star Abdul Carter Switching To Defensive End

Penn State football standout Abdul Carter will switch from linebacker to defensive end for the 2024 season, per the team’s online roster.

Carter is a rising junior who was starting for the Nittany Lions as early as his freshman season. Across his two years with the Nittany Lions, he’s played in 26 games and totaled 105 tackles, with 16 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. He also notched an interception during the 2023 season.

Listed at 6’3″ and 250 pounds, Carter is in the middle of Penn State’s pack for both height and weight. Expected starter Dani Dennis-Sutton is listed at 6’5″ and 270 pounds, but Penn State’s defensive ends range from Sutton’s height and weight to redshirt freshman Joey Palko, listed at 6’2″ and 238 pounds.

Penn State recently lost its top defensive ends, as Adisa Isaac and Chop Robinson declared for the NFL. Carter’s move could fill a gap needed in the defensive line as head coach James Franklin tries to round out his roster.

At present, Carter is still listed as wearing No. 11 on the roster. He wore the No. 11 during his first two seasons, though the jersey number is usually reserved for the team’s top linebacker as part of the Nittany Lion’s “ST1X C1TY” tradition.
