Lady Lions Alum Ashley Owusu Confirms Move To WNBA

Former Penn State women’s basketball guard Ashley Owusu confirmed Friday she will play for the Dallas Wings in the upcoming WNBA season. Owusu previously applied for a sixth season of NCAA eligibility after her lone season with the Lady Lions.

“I am excited for this next chapter of life and couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to continue my basketball career at the next level in the WNBA,” Owusu said on Instagram Friday.

Owusu was drafted by the Wings on Monday night with the No. 33 overall selection. In a press conference, Wings President Greg Bibb said Owusu applied for an extra year of eligibility with the NCAA and that her move to Dallas was pending that decision.

“If she does get that extra year, we’ll discuss that option with her. If she does go back to school, we’ve retained her rights for the year,” Bibb said. “And if she doesn’t go back to school, we’ll talk about what her future with us looks like.”

Owusu spent one season with the Lady Lions. After fighting through an injury in the first half of the season, the graduate student appeared in 20 games and started 18 times. Owusu recorded 354 points, 72 assists, 109 rebounds, and 18 steals.

Before Penn State, Owusu played for Virginia Tech and reached the Final Four with the Hokies in 2023. In that season, she recorded 17 appearances and sevens starts with 86 points, 17 assists, and 26 rebounds as injury slowed her down.

Before Virginia Tech, Owusu spent three years with Maryland. She recorded 88 appearances and started 70 times for the Terrapins. She finished her time with Maryland with 1,286 points, 444 assists, and 370 rebounds.
