Penn State Baseball Catcher Matt Maloney Named To Buster Posey Award Watchlist

Penn State baseball catcher Matt Maloney was added to the Buster Posey Award watchlist Friday, according to a release by the team. The yearly award is given to the best catcher in Division I baseball, and the finalists will be announced on June 6.

Maloney is amid an outstanding season for the Nittany Lions as the catcher has a .312 batting average and 25 RBIs during the team’s 2024 campaign. Additionally, Maloney has a .994 fielding percentage and 12 fielding assists.

Spending his first season in Happy Valley, Maloney played his first two collegiate seasons at Dayton where he appeared in 91 games. Now suiting up for Penn State, Maloney has been a key factor in the team’s rebound season under Mike Gambino.

Previous Penn State catchers to be selected to this watchlist include Matt Wood, who was a preseason honoree in 2022. Wood is now a member of the Milwaukee Brewers system.
