Penn State Places No. 89 In QS 2025 World University Rankings

Penn State has placed No. 89 in the 2025 QS World University Rankings, an annual report that ranks more than 1,500 global universities annually. Penn State dropped slightly from its No. 83 ranking from last year but still placed in the top 8% of all universities.

The university was rated as the No. 24 of all 197 United States institutions. It was the No. 8 public university and No. 6 in the Big Ten, falling behind UCLA, Michigan, Northwestern, Washington, and Illinois.

Penn State received a 61.7 overall score. It scored well in sustainability (96.5) and international research network (97.9) and struggled in faculty-student ratio (25), international faculty ratio (25.1), and international student ratio (28).

“Penn State continues to demonstrate its distinction as a premier world-class institution, and this excellence has been recognized with another top-100 ranking this year,” said Sabine Klahr, interim vice provost for Penn State Global, in a release. “This is due to the broad range of cutting-edge work of faculty, staff, and students across the commonwealth who make our university a top-tier institution for research, education, and global impact.”

The university’s best-placed programs included those in mineral and mining engineering (No. 13 globally), sports-related subjects (No. 14 globally), and earth and marine sciences (No. 17 globally). It placed poorly in art and design (between Nos. 201-240 globally), pharmacy and pharmacology (between Nos. 201-250 globally), and politics (between Nos. 151-200 globally).
