Penn State football punter Riley Thompson was named to the Ray Guy Award preseason watchlist while placekicker Chase Meyer was named to the Lou Groza Award preseason watchlist.

The Ray Guy Award is awarded to college football’s top punter and takes into account net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage, and percentage of punts not returned.

Thompson’s watch list selection is his second in as many seasons after he finished fourth in the Big Ten and 12th nationally in punting average during the 2023 campaign with 45.8 yards per punt.

The Lou Groza Award honors the nation’s top placekicker with a preseason watchlist of 30 kickers narrowed down to three finalists with the prize awarded after the close of the 2024 campaign. The award is selected by a committee that monitors the players on the watchlist throughout the season.

Meyer, a junior transfer from Tulsa, went 17-20 on field goals during the 2023 season with a long of 47 yards. Meyer hasn’t officially won the starting Penn State job and will compete with Sander Sahaydak and Ryan Barker for the role.
