Penn State BOT Finance Committee Recommends Sale Of Shenango Campus

The Penn State Board of Trustees Finance Committee voted Thursday to support the sale of the Penn State Shenango campus to JCL Development LLC for $1 million, according to a university news release.

The proposed sale still needs approval from the full Board of Trustees, which is set for Friday, September 18.

JCL plans to turn the nearly 13-acre, 12-building campus in downtown Sharon, Pennsylvania, into a hub for education, workforce training, economic development, and cultural activities. Penn State called JCL a “locally-focused redevelopment company.”

“While the Penn State Shenango campus wasn’t originally on our radar, we are excited to embrace this new opportunity,” JCL partners Jim Landino and Jen Krezeczowski said in the release. “We plan to bring new energy and innovative ideas to honor its rich history and continue our efforts to strengthen the Shenango Valley.”

The Shenango proposal and a proposed sale of the Wilkes-Barre campus are the first agreements for closing campuses to reach the board since Penn State announced that it would close seven Commonwealth campuses in May 2025.

The proposed sale does not change Shenango’s closing date. The campus will stay open through the spring 2027 semester.

Penn State also noted that discussions about future uses continue for the five other closing campuses, including DuBois, Fayette, Mont Alto, New Kensington, and York.
