Penn State To Host Events For U.S. Media Literacy Week

The week of October 26 marks not only Halloween, but also U.S. Media Literacy Week — and Penn State is hosting numerous on- and off-campus events to honor it.

Events will run from Monday to Friday for the 12th annual celebration, including journalism panels, workshops, and public campus events.

Here’s what you can expect.

Monday, October 26

Journalists will host one-hour panels in the Bellisario Media Center from 9:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. The panels include Penn State student journalists and professionals from publications like the Centre County Gazette.

Tuesday, October 27

The Schlow Centre Region Library will host a workshop on artificial intelligence and misinformation at noon.

Truth in Common founder Deanna Troust will also speak as a guest on digital media, fact-based decision-making, and respectful discourse at a hybrid workshop in the Paterno Library’s Foster Auditorium from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Wednesday, October 28

At 9:30 a.m., the Mid-State Literacy Council will host a workshop to help people navigate English and skills such as banking and renting.

A few hours later, at State College Area High School, representatives from the News Literacy Initiative will host Lunch and Learn sessions from noon to 2 p.m.

Thursday, October 29

Students can visit an informational table at the HUB-Robeson Center, which will survey how students get and feel about the news.

Friday, October 30

In the Central Atrium of Pattee Library, the Student Readership Program will host an interactive session on current events from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

These events mark the fifth year Penn State has participated in the National Association for Media Literacy Education’s designated week.

Can’t make an in-person event? You can view the events happening live on the Bellisario College website. Registration is also available online.
