Meet John Montgomery Ward, Penn State’s Only Baseball Hall of Fame Player

John Montgomery "Monte" Ward, the second man to pitch a perfect game in professional baseball history, called the Nittany Valley home 150 years ago. He is also the first Penn State baseball player to throw a curveball -- he is sometimes incorrectly given credit for inventing the curveball -- witnessed by a crowd of students in front of Old Main. But Ward's place in baseball history is not only due to his impressive pitching and batting records: He was honored posthumously by the Hall of Fame in 1964 for revolutionizing the sport by leading a revolt against the unfair treatment from baseball's board of directors. His forward thinking prompted others to change the way the sport was regarded, as both a pastime and a business.

Lady Lions Defeat Michigan State in East Lansing, 66-54

The 16th ranked Lady Lions had to battle for its win in East Lansing last night, but were able to take down Michigan State, 66-54, for the team's seventh win in eight games.

Like numerous other games this year, the Penn State basketball team lost a heartbreaker in the final seconds against Purdue, 65-65. The loss brings the Lions to 9-10, 0-6 on the season.

No. 16 Lady Lions Dominate Ohio State, 66-42

The 16th ranked Penn State Lady Lions were back in action last night, defeating Ohio State, 66-42. The defense was the story of the game, allowing a season-low 42 points. Penn State's offense, which is usually reliant on a big game from Maggie Lucas, was far more balanced, as 10 of the 11 Lady Lion players to get into the game scored.

Nittany Lions Lose in Ann Arbor, Fall to 0-5 in Big Ten

As is becoming an all to familiar result, the Nittany Lion basketball team fell to Michigan Tuesday night in Ann Arbor, 80-67. Tim Frazier and D.J. Newbill paced Penn State with 17 points each.
