Relay Jam is Looking for Musicians!

Like local music? Hate cancer? This Friday, dozens of Penn State musicians will take the street corners of State College in hopes of raising money and awareness for Relay for Life. The first ever Relay Jam will feature local musicians stationed at corners downtown taking song requests in return for some spare change. Sound like something you and a few of your friends might be interested joining? A very important meeting will be held this Wednesday (3/24) in room 267 Willard at 7:00 PM.

The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 and is now the largest voluntary health organization in the world. To date, they have funded 42 Nobel Prize winners and have contributed to most of the major cancer research breakthroughs of this century, including the Pap smear, mammogram, bone marrow transplant, radiation, chemotherapy treatment, and even the CAT scan. The American Cancer Society is second only to the federal government in total dollars spent on cancer research.

Before you head out the door Friday morning, be sure to grab some loose change to help these guys and girls out. All musicians are welcome, be it guitarists, one man bands, singers, or jazz flutists. For more information, check out the group on Facebook.

Four Diamonds Video Explains Roots

The word THON has left the lips of nearly every single Penn State student at least once for the past 37 years. In the same vein, nearly every student and alumni have a general idea of what THON is all about. If you were to survey any one student still awake in a 100 Thomas lecture, he would probably respond with ” it’s the largest student-run philanthropy” or ‘”it’s FTK.” Both correct. But what if you were to ask how it got started, or what exactly the Four Diamonds represent–would they know?

Recently, Onward State got a hold of a new video vignette released by The Four Diamonds Fund. The video, featuring Four Diamonds visionaries Charles and Irma Millard, Tucker Haas, and countless other Four Diamond Families, explains the roots of The Four Diamonds Fund and THON.

You can find out about the history of the Four Diamonds Fund and check out the video after the jump.
