2011 Senior Class Gift committee

The 2011 Senior Class Gift committee held a town-hall style meeting yesterday in the HUB to discuss the topĀ 10 gift proposals. The proposals, listed below, will be narrowed down to a final three to be voted upon Oct. 25-29.

1. Alma Mater Display

A visible display of the Penn State Alma Mater possibly placed outside the HUB or in the Pattee mall area, most likely inscribed in stone (Penn State equivalent of the Rosetta Stone?).

2. Class of 2011 Monument and Photo Area

A place for students, alumni and visitors to pose for photos with the scenic background of Mt. Nittany, Beaver Stadium and the Bryce Jordan Center; would also feature a plaque commemorating the class of 2011 (watch your back, Lion Shrine).

3. Class of 2011 Trustee Scholarship

Two Trustee Matching Scholarships: one for students attending University Park campus, one for students attending Commonwealth campuses (the gift that keeps on giving).

4. Green Walls for the Library

Green walls and trellises placed in prominent locations in Pattee and Paterno Library; meant to muffle sound, as well as create a “refreshing wall of green” (saving the environment one wall at a time).

5. HUB Aquarium Endowment and Scholarship

An endowment to save and preserve the HUB Aquarium–a gift from the class of 1999–as well as a Trustee Matching Scholarship; also includes the installment of a plaque or bench commemorating the class of 2011 (who doesn’t love a nice combo-gift?).

6. HUB Electronic Board

An electronic board, placed somewhere in the HUB, that lists activities going on around campus for that day or week (think train station meets activities calendar).

7. Lt. Michael P. Murphy Plaza

A plaza built on campus to honor Penn State’s only Medal of Honor recipient, along with all other PSU veterans (I bleed [red] blue and white).

8. Penn State History Traditions Exhibit

A permanent display exhibiting Penn State’s history and traditions (a giant study-guide for future Lion Ambassadors).

9. Replacement Trees

An endowment to fund a replacement for the elm trees affected by Elms Yellow Disease, to be placed in a core part of campus (R.I.P elms).

10. Willow Tree for the Arboretum

A willow tree planted in honor of “Old Willow“; would also include a plaque describing its history and importance (sounds like one expensive tree).

So, what are your thoughts? Email your feedback to seniorclassgift@psu.edu and don’t forget to vote Oct. 25-29 in the HUB, at the downtown Student Bookstore, or online!

‘Tis the Season for Graduation

Hopefully, those graduating this semester already know the dates and locations of theirĀ commencement ceremonies.

But for the friends and family who want/are forced to watch–or for the future grads who let all the spiced rum and eggnog go to their heads–we’ve put together a short and sweet list of save-the-dates.
