Umphrey’s McGee to Rock the State Theatre

Prog rock and jam band fans rejoice! Umphrey’s McGee is coming to State College.

The Chicago-based progressive jam band will play at the State Theatre on Wednesday, February 2 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the night of the show.

For those unfamiliar with the band, think Phish or maybe Dave Matthews Band meets King Crimson or Yes, but with twists of jazz and funk influences thrown in. In typical jam band fashion, Umphrey’s tends to focus more strongly on its live performances than its studio albums. Expect improvised solo odysseys showcasing the band members’ instrumental talent peppered throughout the concert.

Umphrey’s shows are also a haven for large groups of hippies who may or may not be tripping on copious amounts of acid. Not that drugs are necessary to enjoy the grooves the band lays down or to appreciate the talent behind them.

Switch the Right Decision

I’m probably the only person who has spent my entire college career almost evenly divided between working for The Daily Collegian and Onward State. I feel like this has given me a unique perspective on Penn State’s media scene. And I’ve learned a great deal from both media outlets.
