Penn State “Iron Chef” Competition To Benefit Local Food Bank

This Saturday Penn State students will compete in an “Iron Chef” style competition hosted by the Nutrition Graduate Student Association. Teams of three will present their meals to a panel of judges in the Hintz Family and Alumni Center during the event, which begins at 3:30 p.m., and will include other activities such as trivia games, a raffle, and an information session about the local food bank.

The State College Area Food Bank, a Feeding America program sponsored by Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, will receive all proceeds from the competition. According to an article from Centre Daily Times, last year the event raised $3,500 from which the Food Bank was able to purchase almost $15,000 worth of food.

“For every donated cash dollar we receive, we can purchase an additional $4 worth of food.” – Executive Director Linda Tataliba

This year’s judges include Tataliba, as well as Nan Crouter, the Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz dean of the College of Health and Human Development, and Kit Stanton, a local chef.

“If you’ve ever seen the movie You’ve Got Mail, you’ll understand me when I say I have the “Kathleen Kelly Syndrome.” I often have trouble saying exactly what I mean.
