Acclaimed Filmmakers to Speak at PSU

Penn State’s Student Programming Association recently announced that two celebrated documentarians will be venturing to speak at Penn State in March.

Morgan Spurlock, who directed and starred in the acclaimed documentary “Super Size Me,” will speak Monday, March 19 in Schwab Auditorium at 8 p.m. Additionally, John Fox, writer and director of Academy Award-nominated documentary “GasLand” will speak on March 14 at 8 p.m. in Alumni Hall at the HUB. Both events are free.

Spurlock rose to prominence with the internationally renowned “Super Size Me,” which followed Spurlock as he claimed to eat nothing but McDonalds for 30 consecutive days. Since then, Spurlock has directed Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?” and “POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold,” the latter of which was the catalyst for Altoona’s short-lived name switch last April.

Tickets for Spurlock’s talk, part of the “Distinguished Speaker Series,” will be free to students with a valid Penn State ID starting Tuesday, March 12. They will be available at the Bryce Jordan Center Ticket Office, HUB Information Desk, Eisenhower Auditorium and Downtown Ticket Office.

Josh Fox, the founder and Artistic Director of International WOW Company, wrote and directed “GasLand,” an award-winning documentary and 2010 Sundance Film Festival selection that explores effects of hydraulic fracturing drilling (also known as “fracking”) for natural gas. In the film, Fox travels to 34 states to discover the true dangers of drilling for natural gas. Fox began the project after a gas company offered him $100,000 to drill on his family property in Northeast Pennsylvania.

On March 13, the night before Fox speaks, GasLand will be shown in its entirety in the HUB Auditorium at 7 p.m. Both the screening of GasLand and Fox’s speech are free and ticketless.
