Maggie Lucas Adds Another Award to Her Trophy Case

Maggie Lucas

Lady Lions guard Maggie Lucas had already garnered numerous awards and accolades for her outstanding junior campaign, but to win the Premier Players Women’s Player of College Basketball Award, Lucas needed help from the fans.

The Nittany Lion faithful did their part by voting online throughout March and early April to help Lucas bring home the award. Lucas beat out four other finalists — an impressive list that included Baylor’s Brittney Griner, Delaware’s Elena Delle Donne, Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins, and Stanford’s Chiney Ogwumike.

Lucas, the 2013 Big Ten Player of the Year, had been previously named USBWA All-American, second team AP All-American and WBCA honorable mention All-American in a season in which she was third in the Big Ten and 16th in the country averaging 20.1 points per game. By scoring 644 points, Lucas was the second Lady Lion to ever register multiple 600-point scoring seasons. Kelly Mazzante did so three times.

Lucas was lights out from long distance. She knocked down 46.2 percent of her threes to lead the Big Ten and place fourth in the country. Lucas was also in the top 15 in the country in free throw percentage and three-point field goals made. In only three seasons, Lucas is seventh on Penn State’s career scoring list (1,838), second in three-point field goals made (292) and three-point field goal percentage (.433) and 19th in steals (176).
