Penn State Wins Weekend Series With Michigan

It was a good weekend for the Penn State baseball team. After an underwhelming performance in game one on Friday night, Penn State came back strong to win the final two games of their three game series against Michigan this weekend.

Seniors Jordan Steranka and Joey DeBernardis continued their hot hitting and carried the Lions offensively throughout the series. Steranka notched six hits on the weekend, including three homeruns, a triple, and seven RBIs. DeBernardis slugged seven hits, including two doubles, a triple, and a home run.

The Lions dropped game one 7-3 despite outhitting the Wolverines 10-9. Michigan righthander Brandon Sinnery tossed a complete game while Penn State pitchers struggled to find control, giving up eight walks. Penn State’s offense couldn’t get the timely hit as they left nine runners on base.

Game two was a different story, as Penn State’s offensive exploded for 17 hits in a 14-1 victory.  Steranka and DeBernardis combined for seven hits and eight RBIs, while senior leadoff hitter Sean Deegan contributed three hits. Two of Steranka’s three hits were long home runs to right center. Additionally, lefthander Joe Kurrasch turned in a great performance on the mound despite issuing seven walks. He allowed one run on four hits in seven-plus innings. Freshmen JC Coban and JJ White provided production from the bottom of the order, contributing three and two hits respectively.

The Lions success in game two carried over to the series finale, as they came out on top 6-4. Steranka and Deegan were the heroes as they each pounded home runs late in the game. Deegan hit a two-run shot to put the Lions on top in the bottom of the seventh. Steranka’s third homer of the series provided an insurance run in the eighth.

Junior Steven Hill was solid on the mound for Penn State, tossing seven innings and giving up just three runs. Lefthander Greg Welsh shut the door on Michigan and picked up his first save of the season.

The series win brought Penn State’s overall record to 15-20 on the season, with a 4-5 record in Big Ten play. The Lions will host Bucknell on Wednesday before heading to Iowa for a three game weekend series. Penn State has won eight of their last ten games, and will look to move up in the Big Ten standings.
