Two members of the Penn State front seven were honored by the Big Ten for their efforts in the Nittany Lions’ 34-7 shellacking of Navy on Saturday.

Senior linebacker Michael Mauti was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after registering 12 tackles (7 solo) and 2 tackles for loss on Saturday in a game where the defense allowed just 7 points, Bill O’Brien’s first win as head coach. This is the second time Mauti has earned this honor in his career. The first time came in the 2010 Northwestern game.

Mauti has had a stellar season thus far for the Lions, ranking third in the conference and leading Penn State with 33 tackles (17 solo).

In just his third game, redshirt freshman Deion Barnes, a Philadelphia native, was named co-Freshman of the Week, sharing the honor with Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld.

In his second career start, Barnes recorded a season-high 5 tackles (3 solo), as well as his third sack of the season. He also forced his second fumble of the season in the third quarter.

Barnes is tied for second in the Big Ten with three sacks, and is first in the conference with two forced fumbles.
