Penn State Shuts Out Ohio State 3-0

The 10th ranked Women’s Soccer team headed to Columbus to play Ohio State yesterday. Ohio State was 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten heading into last night’s contest.

Throughout the beginning of the first half, it was a very physical back and forth game. Penn State had a few opportunities early on to score off 5 corner kicks in the first half but could not capitalize. Tani Costa scored Penn State’s first goal, and her fifth goal of the season, in the 24th minute from inside the box. Despite Penn State leaving the goal open twice, Ohio State had two off-target shots, which allowed Penn State to maintain their shutout. Costa attempted a shot on goal in the 31st minute that was blocked, but Maya Hayes got the rebound and scored Penn State’s second goal of the half.

In the second half, Ohio State had two shots on goal, which both bounced off the crossbar. In the 70th minute, Christine Nairn had a shot on goal from 35 yards out, which went under the crossbar and over the goalie’s hand for Penn State’s third goal of the game, and Nairn’s 10th goal of the season.

Penn State now has a 16-6-1 record in women’s soccer against Ohio State and is now 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten this season. The Nittany Lions return home on Saturday to play Minnesota at Jeffery Field at noon.
