Penn State Places Second in Director’s Cup Standings

After a successful winter sports season, Penn State has moved from eighth place after the fall up to second place in the Learfield Director’s Cup standings. Penn State has 674.50 points to Stanford’s 685.50 points.

This winter, Penn State wrestling captured its third consecutive national championship while Men’s fencing finished at the NCAA Championships in third place, and Men’s track and field also posted a top 10 finish.

The standings will be updated on April 11th to include Men’s and Women’s basketball, and the final winter results will be released April 25th to include bowling, Men’s and Women’s gymnastics and Men’s hockey.

Third place Notre Dame (610 points) could lessen the gap after advancing to the Final Four in Women’s basketball, while Penn State lost in the second round of the tournament to LSU.

The Men’s gymnastics team is currently the top-ranked squad in the country, and the national championships will be held at Penn State two weekends from now.

Michigan and Minnesota currently sit in fourth and ninth place respectively, making the Big Ten the most represented conference within the top 10. Penn State is one of only nine teams to finish in the top 20 ever year since the Director’s Cup has existed since 1993.

The Learfield Director’s Cup is a joint effort between the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and USA Today. The rankings are determined by performance in 20 different sports — 10 Men’s and 10 Women’s. Stanford has won the Director’s Cup 18 consecutive times.
