Penn State 2013 NFL Draft Recap

The 2013 NFL Draft, after countless hours of preparations, workouts, and interviews, is finally over.

For three Penn Staters, the weekend ended with their dreams coming true, made possible by a phone call from a team that wanted to select them. For others, the weekend came to a disappointing close having not been drafted, and they’ll have to forge their way onto a team as an undrafted free agent. All in all, seven former Penn State players — eight counting Justin Brown who transferred to Oklahoma last summer — will have the opportunity to join countless other Nittany Lions in the National Football League.

Drafted players:

Jordan Hill, DT — Seattle Seahawks, 3rd round.

Hill will play for an up-and-coming Seattle team that made the playoffs in 2012 behind the stellar play of rookie quarterback Russell Wilson. Hill is projected to be 3rd string* (according to OurLads NFL depth chart), behind starter Tony McDaniel, although McDaniel only has four NFL starts in his seven years in the league.

Gerald Hodges, LB — Minnesota Vikings, 4th round.

Michael Mauti, LB — Minnestota Vikings, 7th round.

Mauti and Hodges will be playing together in Minnesota for a team that went 10-6 last year and made the playoffs as a wild-card. They will be coached by Hall-of-Famer and linebacker coach Mike Singletary. Both will have to find their way onto the field behind Pro-Bowler Chad Greenway but should have a legitimate chance to make the 53 man roster. Hodges is predicted to be a 2nd string linebacker, while Mauti is projected to be 3rd string* (OurLads NFL Depth Chart).

*Depth charts are only predictions, and will likely change after summer minicamps.

Undrafted Free Agents – These players have signed a free agent contract with an NFL team after the draft was completed:

Stephon Morris, CB – New England Patriots

Matt Stankiewitch, OL – New England Patriots

Michael Zordich, FB — Carolina Panthers

Mike Farrell, OL – Pittsburgh Steelers

Brown, a former Nittany Lion receiver before transferring to Oklahoma last August, was selected in the sixth round of the draft by the Steelers. Other former Penn State players who could sign deals with teams this week include defensive ends Sean Stanley and Pete Massaro along with quarterback Matt McGloin.
