Distraction of the Day: Blue Band Crashes “Rudy”

Most of us have seen the movie Rudy, the inspirational tale of a young Notre Dame fan beating the odds and accomplishing his lifelong dream of playing on the Fighting Irish football team. He gets to play in the last game of the year, and on the final play of the game, gets a sack and is carried off the field.

But did you know that part of the game, played vs. Georgia Tech in the film, was actually filmed during the Penn State/Notre Dame game in 1992? In fact, “Hail to the Lion” is playing for the part of the film where Rudy’s dad enters the Stadium for the first time and says his famous line: “This is the most beautiful sight these eyes have ever seen!”

Don’t believe me? See for yourself!

Update: A few of our commenters who were at the game — including Dean DeVore, aka “The Voice” of Beaver Stadium — pointed out that the band on the field is actually Notre Dame’s “saluting” Penn State by playing its fight song, not the actual Blue Band. Still a pretty cool tribute.
