David Glen Will Miss Three Games to Donate Bone Marrow

Even in the middle of a disappointing season, the Penn State men’s hockey team is still finding ways to stand out from the crowd.

This morning, it was announced that Nittany Lion forward David Glen (2G, 3A) will miss this Saturday’s game against no. 2 Boston College as well as next weekend’s series against Ohio State to donate bone marrow to an anonymous recipient through the Be the Match program. Glen will start the five day peripheral blood stem cell this Friday, and will be out for the following 7-10 days for recovery.

Glen initially got involved in the program in 2012, when a Match4Kim drive was held in support of Penn State lacrosse player Drew Roper’s mother.

“Last year, Drew Roper’s mom was looking for a bone marrow match, so our whole team went and got swabbed,” Glen said. “Unfortunately none of us were a match, but they keep you in their database. I got a call last spring telling me that I might be a match for someone else.”

Glen mentioned that he has received a lot of encouragement from his coaches and teammates, and few have even taken to social media to express their support.

“You never know when you are going to get the opportunity to help some like this and you never know if it is going to happen again,” Glen said. “This is a rare opportunity that I am grateful and fortunate to have been chosen for.”
