Why Stores Aren’t Selling State Patty’s Day Clothing

Those looking to buy State Patty’s Day gear in preparation for this weekend will have some trouble. Most of the downtown clothing stores have opted not to sell clothing themed around the student-run holiday.

Stores such as McLanahan’s, The Family Clothesline, Lion’s Pride, and the Student Bookstore are notably State Patty’s Day-less this year.

A spokeswoman for The Family Clothesline, a store that used to be one of the biggest providers of State Patty’s clothes, said that the store decided to discontinue sales of the clothing due to low demand—noting that the holiday isn’t as big as it used to be.

The Family Clothesline’s decision to forego selling the green gear was also influenced by State College’s effort to get rid of the disruptive holiday.

“The community has really been pushing to end State Patty’s,” said the spokeswoman. “That’s something that we’re taking into account.”

Other downtown stores seem to be taking a similar stance, opting to sell green Penn State clothing, but nothing directly related to the student-holiday. Lion’s Pride manager Steve Moyer said that the store has been encouraged by Penn State in the past— as recently as last year— not to sell State Patty’s clothing.  He didn’t recall receiving any such letter this year, although members of the State Patty’s Day Task Force were said to have sent them out in recent months.

Penn State has made other efforts to curb the effects of State Patty’s this year, including paying off bars and creating alternative student activities.

Students looking for some State Patty’s apparel can stop by Metro on College Ave, as they seem to be one of the only stores selling SPD gear.
