What’s Next for Wrestlers David Taylor and Ed Ruth?

Ed Ruth and David Taylor just finished their collegiate wrestling careers less than a month ago, winning national champions in their respective weight classes. The path to a successful post-collegiate wrestling career is a lot different than sports like football or basketball where players are drafted, but two of the top Penn State wrestlers have already begun to work towards their freestyle wrestling careers.

Cael Sanderson has already tweeted that the duo will be staying in State College to train with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club to work towards the 2016 Olympics and future World Championships. Other wrestlers who currently train with the NLWC include 4-time All-American Quentin Wright, who graduated from Penn State in 2013, and Olympic Gold medalist Jake Varner, who attended Iowa State.

Ruth and Taylor will participate in their first major tournament since the NCAA National Championships on April 18-19 at the ASICS U.S. Open National Championships in Las Vegas, NV.

In his first post-collegiate freestyle match, Ruth defeated Matt Wilps, a Pitt graduate, with a 10-3 win in a 200-lb. match on April 5.

Taylor has a new website, where you can donate money for his quest to go to Rio in 2016. You can also buy “Magic Man” socks and headphones in conjunction with one of his sponsors, FlipsWrestling. He is also being sponsored by Adidas Wrestling.

Their previous freestyle wrestling experience includes Taylor’s Beat the Streets pin against an Iranian wrestler, as well as placing third at the University World Games. Ruth participated in the University World Games, but was knocked out of the tournament after a first round loss.

Taylor and Ruth have a long way to go to be as successful as Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson, but it helps that he’ll be coaching them along the way.
