Penn State Improves to Second Place in Directors’ Cup Standings

Penn State currently sits in second place for the Learfield Directors’ Cup after the newest standings were released on Thursday.

The Directors’ Cup is a joint effort between the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and USA Today. The rankings are determined by performance in 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports, and Stanford has won the Cup 19 consecutive times.

With national championships from the wrestling and fencing teams this winter, the school has accrued 792.00 points, which is 205.75 points behind Stanford. Penn State went up four spots in the standings after being tied with Wisconsin for sixth place in the final fall standings.

The winter standings were also bolstered by a top-15 finish from the women’s basketball team, as well as points from the swimming and track and field teams. The winter standings will be updated twice more to include points from bowling, gymnastics, and hockey. The fall standings also included the women’s volleyball team’s national championship.

Penn State is one of only nine schools to finish in the top 25 every year since the Directors’ Cup was created in 1993. Last year, Penn State placed sixth in the final standings, which was the highest the Nittany Lions placed in a decade.
