Allen Robinson Drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars

The moment that Penn State football fans were waiting for all weekend is here.

Allen Robinson, Penn State’s all-time leader for receptions in a single season, has been drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 61st overall pick. He’ll join Nittany Lions fellow Paul Posluszny, Matt Stankiewitch, and Nate Stupar in Jacksonville. He’s also the 17th Nittany Lion to be drafted in the first two rounds since 2000.

When Robinson committed to Penn State, he was just a 3-star recruit with offers from the likes of Toledo, Buffalo, and Minnesota, but he ended his career as one of the best receivers in Penn State history. Robinson led the Nittany Lions in receptions over the last two season, and finished his career with 177 catches for 2,479 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also won the Richter-Howard Receiver of the Year award in 2012 and 2013, and was a first team All-Big Ten selection in both years.

Robinson, once projected as a first round pick, fell to the second round due to a deep wide receiver class. Questions about his slow combine time (4.6 40-yard dash) also caused concerns for teams. NFL scouting expert Russ Lande was high on Robinson, however, during an interview with the Big Ten Network.

“Scouts, when they watched the film of Robinson, they loved what they saw,” Lande said last month. “They saw a kid who had natural hands, could win the jump balls, was dynamic in terms of getting up the field after the catch, breaking tackles and making big plays.”

He’ll join fellow draft picks UCF quarterback Blake Bortles and USC wide receiver Marqise Lee in Jacksonville. Congrats, Allen!

UPDATE: 10:10 p.m.: Robinson just finished his first conference call as a pro football player.

“I didn’t have any idea where I would go tonight. I’m blessed with this opportunity to play in Jacksonville,” Robinson said. “I think [playing in a pro-style offense] benefits me a lot. I know they have a lot of great current players on their roster, but as a rookie, for me, I have to come in and try to find a spot on the field.”

He was also asked by Jacksonville reporters about “the Joe Paterno thing” — their words, not ours — and had a perfect response.

“As a player, it taught me how to focus on the task at hand,” said Robinson. “With that whole thing coming down, we still had to play on that Saturday, and we still had Saturdays in the future. At the end of the day, we still had a goal in mind, which was to win the Big Ten.”
