David Taylor, Micha Hancock Nominated for ESPYs

Big Ten Athlete of the Year wrestler David Taylor and women’s volleyball setter Micha Hancock have been nominated for 2014 ESPYs, sports’ answer to the Grammys or Emmys.

Taylor, who had an insanely good college career as part of four national championship squads, is up for the Men’s College Athlete of the Year. He won the Big Ten honor yesterday after winning his second Hodge Trophy in 2013-14. His laundry list of honors includes those trophies, two individual national championships, three Big Ten Wrestler of the Year nods, and a spot on the Big Ten All-Academic team. He finished his final season here with a 34-0 record. Despite all of that, he should have a tough time taking down Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston.

Hancock, up for Women’s College Athlete of the Year, earned Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament honors after the Lions won the national championship this season. A first-team All-American, Hancock was named the Big Ten Setter of the Year after finishing first in the conference in aces per set with 0.65. Her toughest opponent will probably be Breanna Stewart of UConn’s championship-winning basketball team.

The ESPYs have been presented by ESPN since 1993, and have been decided by fan voting since 2004. Since this isn’t the only thing Penn State needs votes in, deposit some votes clicks in Taylor’s and Hancock’s favor here and here. Voting ends of July 16 at 9 p.m.
