Student Tickets Sell Out Without Technology Issues

After many mini-panic attacks and frantic enterings of student ID numbers, the annual Penn State student ticket sale is complete. And there was no Ticketmaster crash this time!

Penn State sold more than 21,000 sets of tickets at $218 apiece in the four days of the sale to sell out the student section. Some stats on the sale from Jeff Garner, assistant athletic director for ticketing sales and services: Freshmen deserve kudos for taking only six minutes to win the race to sell out their allotment on Thursday. Juniors took about 35 minutes on Tuesday (which is inflated because of processing time from the 10 minutes it took juniors to actually claim their tickets), and sophomore tickets lasted about 90 minutes on Wednesday. Left in the dust by their younger classmates, lazy seniors and grad students didn’t buy all of their tickets until 1:42 in the afternoon Monday.

Garner reported no technological issues on Penn State’s or Ticketmaster’s ends this year — if people had issues, it was their own fault. Misunderstandings to which grade students belonged were the most common problem students reported in the thousands of phone calls the ticket office fielded throughout the week.

It’s not known precisely by the ticket office just how many consecutive years Penn State has sold out its student section. Garner said the office’s records of sellouts track them until the early 1980’s, but one of the office’s employees who has been there since the 70’s said they’ve sold out since the early part of that decade. Not too shabby either way.

Of course, the mornings of ticket sales are one of the best times of the year for Penn State Twitter. If you did get up early this week to get tickets, you probably saw us asking you how it went. In classic ticket-buying fashion, the responses ran the gamut.

Now that we’ve all got our tickets, let’s just make sure we show up to the games on time so James Franklin doesn’t have to nag us like Bill had to. Less than 65 days until football season.
