James Franklin’s first Penn State depth chart doesn’t tell fans anything except that he really wants us to know that all his Nittany Lions got a clean slate in regard to their starting positions.

It’s really not a depth chart at all, it’s just the roster broken up into position and ordered by seniority. So, don’t be surprised to see that Drew Boyce, for instance, is the listed starter at outside linebacker, he’s just been on the team the longest of that bunch.

Some seniors listed as starters will be, barring something unexpected, like linebacker Mike Hull, safeties Adrian Amos and Ryan Keiser, and defensive end C.J. Olaniyan. But while no new light is shed on the position battles that could develop along the offensive line and elsewhere, at least the depth chart’s release is a reminder that football season is soon approaching. Big Ten Media Days begin Monday in Chicago, and Penn State will send the trio of Hull, running back Bill Belton, and kicker Sam Ficken. The next Monday is Penn State Media Day and the first day of fall practice.
