Schlow Centre Region Library announced on its website Monday that it will be closed until Sunday, Feb. 22 due to water damages.

A frozen pipe burst early Monday morning, destroying more than 1,500 books and causing library property serious damages — to the tune of $35,000.

While the library is closed, no items are due and late fees for past-due items will not accrue, according to the Schlow website. Normally scheduled events like children’s storytime are also canceled until the library reopens.

This is a particularly unfortunate incident for Schlow, as budget cuts last year forced the library to close for a week from May 12 to May 18, 2014. The library’s state funding was cut from $623,283 in 2008 to $419,030 in 2014, and although funds from Centre County and donations increased, the deficit still took a toll on library services.

Community members interested in helping Schlow to pay for the damages and replace lost books and children’s toys can stop outside the library on Saturday, Feb. 21 between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to donate to canners collecting funds. You can also donate to Schlow online.
