Brown, McIntosh Move To Big Ten Championship Round

A duo of Nittany Lion wrestlers will battle for Big Ten titles today after successful semifinals Saturday at the conference tournament in Columbus, while five more will play in the consolation brackets for third-place finishes.

No. 2 Matt Brown (174) and No. 4 Morgan McIntosh (197) will try to bring home the weight class crowns. Brown rematched with No. 3 Mike Evans from Iowa yesterday, where the result was the same as this year’s Bryce Jordan Center bout. Brown collected more than 1:00 in riding time en route to a 2-0 victory, the same score as the BJC win. Brown will meet No. 1 Robert Kokesh of Nebraska in the championship bout today. The pair has not met this season.

McIntosh, meanwhile, met No. 5 Scott Schiller of Minnesota in his bout, posting a tight 5-4 victory in which he never trailed. After a Schiller takedown tied the match at four, McIntosh managed an escape with 0:14 left to clinch the win. McIntosh will meet No. 3 Kyle Snyder from Ohio State in the final round. McIntosh was upset by then-No. 7 Snyder 6-1 in January, a decision that clinched a victory for the Buckeyes.

Five other Lions wound up in Sunday’s consolation bracket:

  • No. 9 Jordan Conaway lost at 125 to Iowa’s No. 4 Thomas Gillman, 5-4. Conaway needs one more win to clinch a spot at Nationals. Awaiting him is No. 20 Conor Youtsey of Michigan.
  • No. 4 Jimmy Gulibon lost at 133 to Wisconsin’s No. 2 Ryan Taylor, 7-5. Gulibon is already an NCAA qualifier, but he’ll try for third place in the Big Ten Tournament in the consolation round, where he’s matched with No. 11 Johnni DiJulius of Ohio State.
  • No. 20 Matt McCutcheon lost at 184 to No. 14 Brett Pfarr of Minnesota, 4-2. His consolation round opponent is No. 14 T.J. Dudley from Nebraska.
  • No. 14 Zack Beitz lost in his first round matchup to Ohio State’s No. 7 Hunter Steiber, but rebounded with a win over Indiana’s Trevor Moody at 149. Next up is Michigan’s No. 15 Alec Pantaleo.
  • No. 7 Jimmy Lawson notched two consolation round wins at 285 over Nebraska’s No. 25 Collin Jensen and Maryland’s No. 14 Spencer Myers. Lawson, who will also compete in Nationals, will continue his consolation round charge today against No. 6 Adam Coon from Michigan.

As a team, Penn State is sixth entering the final round with 78.5 points. It’s close at the top, where home team Ohio State leads at 102.5. Iowa isn’t far behind in second place with 101. Today’s matches will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network at 3 p.m.
