Four-Star 2016 Forward Joe Hampton Decommits From Penn State

Bad news, sports fans: On the eve of the regular season finale, a Penn State Basketball Thing happened.

Four-star power forward Joe Hampton (Oak Hill Academy/Hyattsville, Va.) announced his decommitment from Penn State’s Class of 2016 without reason on Twitter.

The 6-foot-7 Hampton’s commitment was an exciting one for the program — ranked the 155th-best prospect in the country, it looked like he’d continue the momentum of Pat Chambers’ 28th-ranked Class of 2015, the best in program history. Alas, these things happen when Penn State is 3-14 in Big Ten play and has been frustrating enough that we could write this post, and this one, and this…you get the idea.

Sadder still, Hampton is an Oak Hill teammate of Josh Reaves, a 2015 commit, who apparently couldn’t convince him to stay on board. Hampton’s also received offers from DePaul, Xaiver, and Maryland. He was the only 2016 commit, so Chambers and company will start from scratch (you can refer to BSD’s handy scholarship matrix to see how this affects future classes).

Boy, what a season it’s been. Penn State finishes up its maddening year today at 1 p.m. at Minnesota, one of the few Big Ten teams it’s beaten this year.
